Eenie, meenie, minie, moe
catch a n***er by the toe
if he hollers, let him go
eenie, meenie, minie, moe
This children's rhyme has been around
in various forms since the 1850s. Some historians have associated
the words ‘eenie meenie minie moe’ with Celtic
Druidry. Others have asserted that Inimicus animo
is Latin for ‘enemy of the spirit’ with n***er
being a synonym for ‘Devil’ or ‘Dark One’.
There are many alternative verses of this
rhyme, but as early as 1919 an offensive version of this
poem appeared which inserted the word n***er. After 1965,
the second line was widely changed to become catch a tiger.
Interestingly, in the Oliver Stone
film ‘Natural Born Killers’, Juliette Lewis
says ‘Catch a red neck by the toe...’ yet it
is rumoured that the original screenplay by Quentin Tarantino
unsurprisingly read ‘Catch a n***er by the toe…’.
