Spirit

The results of the inquiry set up following the death of 38-year-old Rocky Bennett after being restrained by up to five nurses at the Norvic ‘secure’ psychiatric clinic in Norwich, October 1998, has founded the NHS, and particularly its mental health services, to be institutionally racist. No surprises there then, the real question is; what now?

Visit the Ligali spirit page for further information on this and other stories.

Terminology

In this current climate where the use of negative race orientated terminology such as ‘swamping’ is used and celebrities like John Rhys-Davies, who plays warrior dwarf Gimli in the film Lord of The rings spearheads a BNP campaign in which he claims ’ Western civilisation was under threat because white Europeans produce fewer babies than Muslims ‘, there is a need for us to be armed with the knowledge to counter ignorance. You can access our Facts an Stats page from the terminology section. We have updated the links and included many new items such as the final ethnic minority labour market report, Black and ethnic minority children poverty: Exploring the issues, Ethnic Classification in the United Kingdom and United States Censuses, UK Population projections by ethnicity, BBC research into public disillusion with politics, Independent Inquiry into the death of David Bennett and Black Voluntary and Community Sector

Visit the Ligali terminology page for further information and stats and facts.

RIO (Racially Insensitive Offender)

The front page of the February 2004 edition of the Observer Music Monthly, featured four faceless, naked African women draped, in sexually provocative poses, around the feet of two, fully clothed African American artists. The artists were Outkast and the women were… well, we have no idea. Their faces were conveniently hidden from view although the rest of their bodies were on display.

Casper Llewellyn Smith, Editor of the monthly publication asserted that it was a hobby of OutKast’s to pose with naked models, in this case in what he described as a ‘knowing pastiche of an old Jimi Hendrix sleeve’. Presumably Llewellyn Smith felt this was sufficient justification for publishing an offensive cover that denigrated African women and perpetuated the image of African American men as pimps for the entertainment, gratification and no doubt amusement of the Observer’s Sunday readers.

Looking forward....

ACLT
When: Saturday 6 March 2004, 11:00 till 5pm.
Where: Lewisham High Street Market

The ACLT are working in conjunction with the National Blood Service (NBS) in trying to encourage our community to step forward as potential blood and bone marrow donors. This campaign started in 2003 and was relatively successful.

The Sickle Cell Society (SCS) and Sickle and Thalassaemia Association of Counsellors (STAC) are also involved in this campaign as Sickle Cell and Thalasseaemia sufferers regularly need blood transfusions as well as cancer sufferers.

The 1st blood clinic for 2004 will take place on:
Saturday 6th March at the Lewisham High Street Market, 'Market Focal Area' from 11:00 till 5pm.

They can also join the bone marrow register at the same time if they wish to do so.

Blood groups vary among the different races and African and African Caribbean donors are under represented on the register. This makes it difficult to find compatible blood in an emergency or for those who need regular transfusions.

Please help us to spread this message to as wider circle as possible.
