It was October 1999, while president of Coventry’s African Caribbean Society that Tuggstar wrote his first poem regarding the importance of black history. During the following year, he made appearances on London ‘s poetry circuit, however it wasn’t until 2001 during a year away in Canada, where he became a true performance poet. He quickly acquired a name for his self, accepting an invitation to be apart of Toronto’s West Side Cypher and numerous performances for Toronto’s number one poetic co-operation “Up From the Roots” where shows were televised nation wide. Since then he has performed in Atlanta, New York and Australia.

Since his return to London in 2002 he has quickly created a name for himself on open mic and performance night showcases. He returned to Canada in August ’03 as the sole UK representative in Toronto’s first International Poetry Competition, (where he competed against 37 other poets to reach the finals.) In September ’03 he won the grand final of “Lyrical Court” where he contested against a talented array of U.K and U.S poets.

He carries an array of cultures, identities and perspective through his vast and unique experience as a Ghanaian born in London. He has been able to wrap up various perspectives and re-lay intense experiences with single clarity. He aims to be a vessel for those that came before him and a link for others to understand a vast scattered people.

In summer 2003 he released his first book “The Way of the Word” to huge critical acclaim from a wide range of cultural observers including HBO poets, and Channel 5. Displaying a love for his Ghanaian culture his aim is to show his people what their son has been able to accomplish.

Lyrical Healer specialises in spoken word and song, she has been performing for over a decade. Work experiences include designing and teaching workshops, public performances, vocal tuition, voluntary youth work, mentoring through the creative arts and self development programs.

Excel Promotions, founded by Winsome Duncan aka Lyrical Healer is an organisation that supports and cultivates disadvantaged young people in their creative endeavours. This company began on the basis of being a part of the solution and not the problem. Being the solution means taking positive steps, especially towards the inclusion of young people who are deemed as social outcast or rebels due to deviant behaviour. Excel Promotions gives a voice back to the voiceless by specifically targeting trouble spot areas to re-establish links within the community.

Excel Promotions also provides monthly events such as “Awaken The Truth” which include guest speakers, featured artists and open & 3styling mic. This formulates an evening of edutainment and creativity. The night focus is to support creative U.K. artists and provide a welcoming environment to perform their artistry.

The Ligali motif is inspired by both the ancient Nigerian Nsibiri sign for human relationship and communication, and four of the seven Kawanzaa principles Umoja (Unity), Nia (Purpose), Ujima (Responsibility) and Imani (Faith)

We believe that identifying and reclaiming our original identity is an integral part of promoting the emotional, spiritual and mental progression of the African community in Western society.
