On Friday 10 January 2003, the government hosted a serious Gun crime summit with various members from local authority and government institutions, the meeting was scheduled to last one hour. It over ran by 45 minutes making its entire duration 1 hour 45 minutes.

There were two initiatives decided:

1) To look into setting a date for a possible firearms amnesty
2) To set a follow up meeting to discuss progress on the issue in 3 months time.

Many within the African British community feel we haven't got three months, if another person becomes victim of this problem, society as a whole would have been partly responsible for its indefensible procrastination.

Ligali intends to invite members from ALL levels of our community.

There will be no "special guests", only concerned community members.

We know the problems so we'll be looking to locate SPECIFIC solutions.

Objective
Youth and violent crime. We all know the problems, so the purpose of this summit is to locate and agree solutions. Our intent is to produce a list of essential recommendations, alternative and realistic self help action plans, all which can be implemented independently if the government fails to act.

Topics on the Agenda

1. Tackling the root

  • Educational Reforms
  • Media Reforms
  • Social (Inclusion) Reforms

2. Law and order

  • Court support
  • Police support

Where we'll be asking questions like…

"How best can the media assist in raising public vigilance against perpetrators of gun crime?"
"What measures are needed to ensure children are not exposed to glamourised violent media?"
"What can we do to teach the young to embrace traditional community values?"
"What can be done to stop the youth in our community feeling excluded by society?"

We will then request a coordinated effort from all community papers to report the summit results on their respective front pages simultaneously.

The Ligali motif is inspired by both the ancient Nigerian Nsibiri sign for human relationship and communication, and four of the seven Kawanzaa principles Umoja (Unity), Nia (Purpose), Ujima (Responsibility) and Imani (Faith)

We believe that identifying and reclaiming our original identity is an integral part of promoting the emotional, spiritual and mental progression of the African community in Western society.

African British is the name now used to describe the community previously mislabelled as Afro-Caribbean, Black British, UK Black, Negro, Nigger, Coloured and Black. It embraces all British nationals with antecedents originating directly from Africa or indirectly via African diasporic communities, such as those in the Caribbean and South America.
