BBC Response to BBC London Letter
Submitted By: Ligali Media Network
Date: Fri 9 April 2004

Following the dismissal of Henry Bonsu from his popular Sunday night show on BBC London 94.9fm, there was much debate not only about the motivations behind his sacking but the wider issue of radio representation of the African British community.

Of the various implications that were highlighted amongst media circles and community forums, the most prominent was the abscence of a serious and uncompromising debate show for the African British community supplied by the BBC.

The loss of a pioneering show from BBC London, Henry's dismissal and the general failure of the BBC London to meet the needs of African Britons prompted us to write an in-depth letter, highlighting our concerns and recommendations for improving the service we receive.

The BBC responded with an equally in-depth and detailed letter. They also expanded upon what we see as the overall failure of the BBC Radio network in serving its African British audience by addressing issues relating to 1xtra. Unfortunately, their response failed to acknowledge any of our constructive criticism and failed to meet us on any suggested solutions for potential ways forward.

Unsatisfied with this response, we sent 3 separate letters to the BBC regarding different strands that had arisen from our correspondance. The BBC have suggested that a meeting may be a more appropriate way to address these in-depth matters and we will keep you informed on any progress that results from these discussions.
