Jabbor Gibson: African American Hero
Jabbor Gibson: African American Hero

African American teenager Jabbar Gibson is hailed a hero by Africans worldwide whilst US attempts to criminalise him through the media fail.

Eighteen year old Jabbar Gibson who had never driven a bus before courageously took charge of a discarded vehicle and rescued several survivors of Hurricane Katrina by driving them to safety. Gibson who endured a seven hour non stop drive to the Astrodome in Houston managed to save several Americans including several mothers and their babies.

Rescued passenger, Randy Nathan was one of many residents trapped after the Hurricane hit the St. Bernard housing project in New Orleans. His family was rescued by Gibson after being repeatedly ignored by passing helicopters despite their best efforts to get their attention. Nathan said "If it weren’t for him right there… we'd still be in New Orleans underwater. He got the bus for us."

.. as long as I saved my people

However some US media organisations have chosen to report Jabbar Gibson’s heroic act as one of ‘extreme looting’. The NewsChannel 5 network stating ‘the 18-year-old who ensured their safety could find himself in a world of trouble for stealing the school bus’.

In response to racist media claims such as the CNN report which states ‘an 18-year-old also decided to take matters into his own hands and stole an abandoned city school bus’, the heroic African teenager replied "I don’t care if I get blamed for it… as long as I saved my people."

LIGALI Comment
