Schoolboy stabbed in racist anti-African attack
Wed 3 October 2007

A fifteen year old boy has been seriously injured following a racist stabbing near a school in the south of Glasgow.

Christopher Ikolo was assaulted in a lane between Aikenhead Road and Polmadie Road as he was returning to Holyrood Secondary school from his lunch-break. As he walked along the street a european assailant called him a ‘black b**tard’ and then stabbed him in the back in broad daylight.

Ikolo attempted to run to safety inside his school despite being in pain and not being able to breath properly. His assailant only gave up on chasing him when Ikolo was able to call for help as he reached the schools sports centre.

The police, who are calling the incident a "racially aggravated" attack, have described the attacker as european, about 19 years old, 6ft tall with a slim build. He was wearing a black and white jumper and blue or black baseball cap during the attack at about 1400 BST.

Ikolo was taken to Glasgow Victoria Infirmary where he received emergency surgery for a life threatening wound to his kidney. His condition is now described as stable.

Detective Sergeant Debbie Johnstone said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a young boy and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the attack to come forward…. I believe the suspect may have ran onto Aikenhead Road and passing motorists or pedestrians may have seen something which could help us in this inquiry."

Glasgow has a serious problem with racist attacks. On Saturday 22 September 2007 a gang of around nine european youths seriously assaulted two Asian teenagers walking in Trongate.

Last year, there were 168 racist incidents carried out by young people in Glasgow.
